Location: Lympne Castle
Place: Lympne, Kent
Date: 12 November 2010
Time: 20:00 - 03:00
The land on which Lympne Castle stand has seen key moments in history. It has been host to a Roman fortress and watch-tower then an Anglo-Saxon outpost through to a Norman Castle. The current Castle has parts dating from around the 13th century. It was also home to some of the Archdeacons of nearby Canterbury, including Thomas A' Becket. Going through time it has also been a Tudor home and due to its high land position it was requisitioned by the military for a look-out post during WWII. On a clear day you can see over to the coast of France.
Once inside the Castle you are transported back to mediaeval times. The Great Hall boasts part panelled walls, gothic windows and wooden roof beams. Some say you can still hear the echoes of mediaeval music, laughter and lively talk of bygone feasts. The West Room, was added in Edwardian times when the famous architect Sir Robert Lorimer was commissioned to restore the castle, which was then near to ruin.
Activity
Many ghostly tales are rumoured about the Castle, one of which is the ghostly presence of a Roman solider. It is said that he fell to his death whilst on duty in the watch-tower, however his footsteps are still heard today walking back to his post at the top of the tower, only no one appears...
Feelings of despair and fear are sometimes felt in areas of the Castle. This is said to be from a small group of Saxons that were caught hiding by Norman soldiers. They were promptly slaughtered and their residual energy is still felt today.
Many other apparitions, one in Tudor dress, have been seen around the various rooms and grounds too.
